zirconia Crowns

Durable ceramic crowns for a natural, lasting result.

A crown is a cap that covers a damaged tooth completely, restoring its shape, strength and appearance. It is what we use when a tooth has too little healthy structure left to hold a filling.

When a crown is the right answer

  • After root canal treatment on a back tooth, which becomes brittle
  • A cracked or split tooth that still has a healthy root
  • A tooth with a very large old filling and thin remaining walls
  • A badly worn tooth in a heavy grinder
  • A discoloured or misshapen front tooth where bonding is not enough
  • As the anchor for a [dental bridge](/services/dental-bridges)

Materials

Zirconia is our default for back teeth — extremely strong, and now aesthetic enough that most patients cannot pick it out.

Layered porcelain / emax for front teeth, where translucency matters. Light passes through it the way it passes through natural enamel.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal is still available and cheaper, but the metal margin can show as a dark line at the gum over the years. We will tell you where it is a false economy.

The two visits

Visit one. The tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic — a small, even thickness is removed all round to make room for the crown. We take a digital or physical impression, record the shade against your neighbouring teeth, and fit a temporary crown so you can eat and smile normally.

Visit two, usually 10 to 14 days later. The temporary comes off, the permanent crown is tried in, and we check the fit, the shade and your bite before it is cemented. If the shade is not right we send it back — you do not have to live with a crown you dislike.

Does it hurt?

Preparation is done under full anaesthetic and is comfortable. Some sensitivity to cold between the two visits is normal while the temporary is on. Once the permanent crown is cemented that settles.

Caring for a crown

Brush and floss it exactly like a natural tooth. The crown itself cannot decay, but the tooth underneath and the gum around it can — which is why the margin needs cleaning properly. Avoid biting nuts, ice or bones on it. A well-made crown in a well-kept mouth lasts many years.

Cost

Ceramic crowns start at Rs 15,000 per tooth including both visits, the temporary and the shade matching. Zirconia and layered porcelain are quoted individually. Where a crown follows a root canal, we can split the total across the two appointments.
