Teeth Whitening
Safe, brightening treatments for a naturally radiant smile.
Professional whitening lifts the natural shade of your teeth using a controlled-strength gel, with your gums fully protected. Done properly it looks like your own teeth on their best day — not the artificial white of a filtered photograph.
What actually works, and what wastes your money
Charcoal powders — avoid. They are abrasive. They scrub off surface stain and, over time, enamel. Thin enamel lets the yellow dentine underneath show through more, which is the opposite of what you wanted.
Whitening toothpastes — useful for maintenance, useless as treatment. They remove some surface stain but cannot change the underlying colour of the tooth.
In-clinic professional whitening — this is the real thing. Typically three to four shades in a single 60 to 75 minute session, carried out under supervision with your gums isolated.
Dentist-supplied home kits — custom trays with a lower-strength gel over about two weeks. Slower and gentler; good for topping up later.
Your whitening appointment
- Scale and polish first. There is no point bleaching a layer of tartar.
- Shade match and photograph under daylight, so the result is measurable rather than a matter of opinion.
- Gum isolation. A protective barrier is placed before any gel touches a tooth.
- Whitening gel applied in timed cycles, monitored throughout.
- Fluoride application to settle any sensitivity.
- Final shade record, plus a written maintenance routine.
Is whitening safe for enamel?
Professional whitening gel works by oxidising the stain molecules inside the tooth. It does not thin or soften enamel. Temporary sensitivity for a day or two is the common side effect, and fluoride plus a desensitising toothpaste handles it.
Who should not whiten yet
Whitening does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or white fillings. If you have a composite filling on a front tooth it will stay exactly the shade it is while everything around it gets brighter. That needs planning first, which is what the consultation is for. We also postpone whitening if you have active decay, gum disease, or are pregnant.
How long does it last?
Usually one to two years. Tea, coffee, paan, smoking and cola all shorten it. Rinsing with water after tea makes a genuine difference, and a short top-up session at twelve months keeps it steady.
Cost
In-clinic whitening starts at Rs 12,000, including the shade matching and the fluoride application. If a scale and polish is needed first that is quoted separately, and you see the whole figure in writing before anything begins.
