A filling repairs a tooth that decay has damaged. At Jan Dental Lounge we place tooth-coloured composite fillings, shade-matched to your natural enamel, so the repair is invisible once it is polished.

Amalgam or composite?

Silver amalgam fillings are still cheap and still durable, but they are grey, they expand and contract with hot and cold, and they need more of the healthy tooth to be cut away. We use composite for almost every case: it bonds directly to the tooth, so we remove only the decay itself, and it looks like a tooth rather than a repair.

What the appointment feels like

• Local anaesthetic, and we wait until you are properly numb before starting. We test first.
• The decayed tissue is removed. You will feel pressure and hear a whirring, but no pain.
• The cavity is cleaned, conditioned and bonded.
• Composite is placed in thin layers and light-cured.
• The filling is shaped to your bite and polished to a shine.

Most single fillings take 30 to 60 minutes. You can eat straight afterwards — composite is fully set before you leave.

Signs you may need a filling

• Sensitivity to sweet, cold or hot food
• A sharp edge, or food catching in one spot
• A visible dark line, hole or chip
• A dull ache when biting on one particular tooth

Pain is not required. Plenty of cavities are found at a routine check-up before they ever hurt — which is exactly when they are cheapest to fix.

How long will it last?
